What is Pura Vida?
Translating to “pure life” in Spanish, “pura vida” is more than just a saying. It’s a lifestyle of sorts. One that’s all about enjoying life’s little pleasures, slowing things down and living life to the fullest.
“Pura vida” is widely used in Costa Rica to express a range of sentiments, including “hello,” “goodbye,” “I’m doing well,” “no worries,” and even to acknowledge difficult situations with a sense of acceptance.
More Than a Greeting:
It’s a cultural touchstone that embodies the Costa Rican lifestyle, which is often described as cheerful, optimistic, and relaxed.
Diverse Applications:
You’ll hear it used when someone asks how you’re doing, when you’re saying thank you, when you’re expressing satisfaction with a situation, or even as an exclamation of joy or contentment.

The literal translation is “pure life,” but it’s understood more broadly as a way of embracing life’s simple joys and finding happiness in the present moment.
